On 9 October 2013, the Centre for European Studies in cooperation with the CDA Research Institute (Dutch Christian Democrats) will organize a seminar in Utrecht on the theme of governing size and decentralization in Utrecht. The issue of decentralisation and governing size is garnering great interest across the Netherlands. The Dutch government’s plans for the formation of so called ‘superprovinces’ and ‘megamunicipalities’ is encountering much resistance from Dutch society. During the seminar the main question is how to ensure that forms of decentralization will not turn into an undesirable form of centralization and an increase of governing size which will lead to a disconnect between municipalities and their citizens. A panel of experts will discuss the issue including input from the audience, with the discussion being led by Theo Bovens, Chair of the CDA Research Institute. Participation in this event is free and more information is available at You can register by filling in the online registration form at: This seminar is the second in a series of events focused on reform topics; the first seminar in the series was held on 16 April 2013 and discussed affordable and sustainable health care.
