Artificial Intelligence and Governance: Going Beyond Ethics

In April 2021, the European Commission unveiled its regulatory proposal for an Artificial Intelligence framework for excellence and trust. This document will predetermine the course of debate in Europe and offer a regulatory model, which could be replicated globally. The Commission has proposed novel policies to govern the potentially risky application of AI and democratic oversight on the rollout of complex AI technologies.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing our world. This new phenomenon carries many threats, but also offers many opportunities. We need to find a suitable framework to support trustworthy AI in the European Union. We must generate a suitable governance model that not only has its foundation in law, but that also ensures democratic oversight through the open and collaborative participation of all stakeholders.

The Martens Centre will present its research paper dedicated on: ‘Artificial Intelligence and Governance: Going Beyond Ethics’, authored by Michał Boni, Senior Research Associate of the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies.
