External Players in Africa

China, Russia, Saudia Arabia, and Turkey – a growing number of external players are engaging in Africa and influencing politics, economy and security on our neighbouring African continent. These developments are also leading to new challenges and increasing competition between the USA, Japan and Europe.

Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies together with the Political Academy, will address this important and pressing development issue as part of its focus on Africa in a panel debate featuring Gerald Hainzl (National Defence Academy), Velina Tchakarova (FACE For A Conscious Experience), Peter Hefele (Martens Centre) and Thomas Vieregge (Die Presse). The aim is to examine the issue of the engagement strategies of the “new actors” on the African continent. The discussion will also focus on the effects of European involvement in Africa and the associated challenges in promoting the rule of law, democracy and human rights.
